Chapter Sixteen

I spent the whole next day in a bubble of excitement and anticipation for my date with Logan. He texted me around noon to let me know that he would pick me up at six, and I was constantly looking at the time on my phone to count down the minutes until he got here. An undercurrent of mild anxiety was also simmering inside of me, but I tried not to focus too much on the fears that I knew were the root of it.

Like, how maybe he’d want to keep this as a friends-with-benefits type situation. Casual sex. Simple with no strings. I honestly wasn’t sure if I could be okay with something like that—my feelings for Logan were anything but casual.

Adam had stayed up the entire night before like he said he would, binge-watching Game of Thrones. He’d been asleep all morning but I knew he would likely be getting up soon to get ready for work. Once he left for the hospital, I would have about an hour and a half to get ready until Logan got here.

I made a mental checklist of things to do, like shave my legs and put on a face mask before I put on any makeup—my skin had been so dry lately. I also already picked out an outfit and had it laid out on my bed in my room. Until I could start getting ready, though, I sat on the couch and watched trashy reality television in hopes that time would move by faster.

Eventually, Adam rose from his daytime slumber. He came out of his room in his boxers and began looking for something to eat in the kitchen, rummaging through the cabinets before he veered toward the fridge. He silently pumped his fist in the air when he found all of the Thanksgiving leftovers in there, and I sat there giggling as I watched him.

Spinning around to face my direction, he lifted his chin towards me and spoke, “I’m going to heat this up. You want some?”

I shook my head. “No thanks.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m not that hungry yet. I’ll eat later. Thank you, though!”

Adam shrugged before popping a container of food into the microwave. After making himself a plate, he stood at the kitchen counter and ate over the sink. “What are you up to tonight?”

Shit. I was hoping he wouldn’t ask me that—I really didn’t want to have to lie to him. “I’m not sure,” I replied casually. It was technically true. I didn’t know where Logan was taking me or what we’d be doing tonight.

“Well, don’t be too much of a hermit. I’m sure Rachel would love to hang out with you.” He threw it out as casually as he could. “You know, if you need a girls’ night or something.”

I couldn’t help but smile at him. “Thanks, Adam. I really like her.”

Adam’s face morphed into something like wonder. “I know, isn’t she amazing?”

“She really is. I’ll reach out to her and set something up soon.
